Eyewitness Travel Guide to Florence and Tuscany
Good graphical guide to the region. (****)
Alta MacAdam: Blue Guide Florence, Ninth Edition
Indispensable. My favorite book for art and architecture in Florence. (*****)
i'm so glad that this will still be there when i am visiting in mid april. it looks fantastic.
in trying to be prepared and buy tickets to the museums early we discovered that the week we will be there is 'culture week' and the museums are free and tickets can't be purchased in advance. do you think this means there will be impossibly long lines to get in and do you have any advice for how we could prepare in advance?

Hmm - that is just for the state museums, like the Uffizi, Bargello, etc, right? Usually it is pretty busy - but - it is especially crowded on that weekend when you get Italians from other cities and northern Europeans taking long weekends here.
I would think the smaller places like the Strozzi will probably have the usual level of visitors for that time of year, maybe even less if everyone is in the free museums...
The only other thing I could suggest is the Friends of the Uffizi card - but - then you will pay 100 euro for the card (for a family of four) when the admission is free. However - this card permits you to enter without waiting in line...
More info on that is here: http://www.amicidegliuffizi.it/

yes, i believe it is just the state museums. so do you think if we plan on hitting the most popular ones during the week instead of on the weekend we'd be better off?
i was just looking at the friends of the uffizi site and thinking it might be a good option. i wouldn't mind paying the money even when it's free because i am happy to support the museums and skipping the lines would be nice. i'm wondering if the card would have time to get to us before we leave.
thank you for your advice!

Yes I would plan Tues, Wed. Th. for the Uffizi, Bargello, Accademia, Pitti Palace, etc.
The card you can get when you are here - they give you a laminated card in minutes - and you can charge the membership fee.

oh, that would be great. is there somewhere in particular i have to go to buy it or can i get it right at the uffizi?

The office is at the Uffizi - right now it is right by the main entrance - there is a door all the people in the regular (non reserved) line go in, and the other side of the same doorway is where you go in to make reservations (separated by those crowd separator things like at the cinema or a club) and the Friends desk - I think it is door # 2. But - when there are exhibits in the Sala delle Reali Poste (which is on the other side of the Piazza degli Uffizi - just a few feet away) then the welcome desk is there - as they mention here http://www.amicidegliuffizi.it/en_welcome_desk.aspx
